Trying to redirect and control the mind is not an easy task. For example, a person who tries to practice silent meditation to calm down the mind or empty the mind will soon find out that the mind keeps wandering from one thought to another thought. Even wanting to have an empty mind is still a thought.
The mind wants some engagement. The mind needs something to do and wants something to focus on. Therefore, the most effective and easiest type of meditation is called mantra meditation.
When adding a mantra to our meditation, the mind can now focus on this mantra. The word mantra is made up of two parts. Man means mind and tra means to draw away or to liberate. So the mantra is drawing the mind away from worldly concerns.
A genuine spiritual mantra comes from the spiritual realm and is not an ordinary material sound of this world. When we listen to such a mantra there is a purifying effect on the mind and on the heart.
