Magic and numbers aren't inherently bad. It's the acts of taboo dark magic that people think of when they hear "magic." But miracles, are they not a form of magic? Magic is the ability to interact and more deeply commune with and understand the Metaphysical. The corrupters have a dark intent and harness and pervert magic, bending it to their own selfish and destructive will. The poison the waters, and develop negatvely charged sigils and symbols.
But in antiquity, all of the wise men of nobility practiced some form of praise magic, that communed with the Creator.
