A very good introduction to the development of 'perception management', propaganda & manufactured 'fakery'.
"The Century of the Self" is a 4 part 2002 British television documentary series by filmmaker Adam Curtis.
It focuses on the work of psychoanalysts Sigmund Freud and Anna Freud, and Freud's nephew Edward Bernays, the "father of public relations (PR)".
Exploring how Freud's theories on the unconscious led to the development of public relations by his nephew Edward Bernays; the use of desire over need; and self-actualisation as a means of achieving economic growth and the political control of populations.
Interestingly, Edward Bernays' grand nephew is Marc Bernays Randolph, the co-founder of Netflix.
In episode one, Curtis says "This series is about how those in power have used Freud's theories to try and control the dangerous crowd in an age of mass democracy."
The whole 4 part series can be found on pooTube & possibly archive.org.
Other notable documentary films by Adam Curtis are "The Mayfair Set", "The Power of Nightmares", "The Trap" & "Bitter Lake".
