Where does the electricity come from to fuel them?

So they take longer to make, thy are noo doubt less environmentally friendly to dispose of(?) and just now you can only go short distances. Keep in mind that over 100 years ago they had electric taxis in London which could go 30 or 40 miles on a charge. Seems like the technology was held back there.
