WHAT IS HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE (HFMD)?
HFMD is a common viral infection most often affecting young children, but does occur in adults. It is characterised by blisters on the hands, feet and in the mouth.
WHAT CAUSES HFMD?
The most common virus that causes Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease is Coxsackie virus (CV) A16. Other viruses can also cause it, including:
* Enterovirus 71
* CVA6
* CV A5, A7, A9, A10, B2, and B5
* Echovirus
* Coxsackie virus
WHO GETS HFMD?
Hand foot and mouth disease is very infectious, so several members of the same family or a school class may be affected. Outbreaks are most common during the late summer or fall months. Adults and older children with HFMD tend to develop a milder form of the illness compared with younger children. But adults can sometimes have quite severe symptoms.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HFMD?
Mild fever is usually the first sign of hand, foot and mouth disease. This starts about 3 - 5 days after adults have been exposed to the disease.
After the fever you can get:
* painful red blisters in their mouth
* red or fluid-filled blisters that are not itchy or painful - (usually on the palms of hands, or soles of feet)
* loss of appetite
* a sore throat and mouth
* a general feeling of weakness or tiredness
WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS FOR HFMD?
Paracetamol 1g as needed for fever/pain
Ibuprofen 400mg every 4-6 hours or as needed.
Have plenty to drink
Soft foods such as soups, ice cream, smoothies and mashed potato.
For Mouth Pain try:
- Lidocaine gel
- Benzydamine mouthwash or spray.
- Choline salicylate gel (Bonjela®). This cannot be used in children under the age of 16 years. Pregnant women should also not use it.
- Warm salty mouthwashes
WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A DOCTOR?
See a doctor quickly if you can't drink fluids due to a sore mouth, or you are becoming dehydrated. See a doctor if any unusual symptoms develop or you are worried.
