Conservative MPs are in uproar over Boris Johnson’s decision to impose new coronavirus tiers across the country.
The Prime Minister announced after the national lockdown in England ends on Monday, a new tougher tier system will be introduced across the country.
99% of England will now be in tier 2 or tier 3, which see restrictions on the hospitality sector and restricting people’s freedoms to travel. Kent and much of the north of England will be in tier 3, with the rest of England in tier 2 other than Cornwall, the Isle of Wight and the Isles of Scilly which will be in tier 1.
The COVID Recovery Group, a group of Tory MPs who are sceptical of lockdowns say the new system is “authoritarianism at work”.
In particular, MPs who will now face tier 3 in their constituency are concerned about the fairness of how the tiers were imposed, and the impact the tough restrictions could have on local businesses.
The government have defended their decision, saying that the new tiers must be in place to protect the NHS.
