Norm Ryder of Citizen’s Forum with James Mansell The New Direction Report by Janet Patterson -a look at WorksafeBC look at WorksafeBC. For more examples of Worer;s Compensation abuseive actions in Canada please see the CBC Go Public report at https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/insurance-surveillance-injured-1.5899254?cmp=rss
Norm and James are both injured workers in BC. They have many experiences of WorksafeBC and the Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal (WACT) abusing their rights as injured workers.
Some of their experiences are common to each other. One of their common experiences is their claims were decided during the period of gain sharing by employees at WorksafeBC. Gainsharing is one of the many issues at WorksafeBC reported by Janet Patterson in her The New Direction Report. Gainsharing by its simplest definition was bonuses paid to Worksafe staff and executives for denying claims and forcing in injured workers back to work while still injured and often causing more injury. There are several references in her report to this practise (https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/governments/organizational-structure/ministries-organizations/ministries/labour/ministry-reports ) other reports looking at issues within Worksafe BC expressing a similar theme are also available on this link. Page 313 of the New Directions report is the results of an information request to Worksafe explaining the program and the years in effect.
A question about the report is why did a report that was initially conducted under a “hurry up” process and given little time to collect evidence languish on the Minister of Labour’s desk – Harry Bains for 10 months before it was released just before an election. Why has the minister (former IWA union official) not acted on or commented in the media on the report since the public release. The current government in BC the New Democratic Pa https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/insurance-surveillance-injured-1.5899254?cmp=rss rty (NDP) is assumed to be a party more focussed towards workers needs. Shouldn’t they also be actively worker on correcting the abuses of their Crown Corporation the Worker’s Compensation Board also known as WorksafeBC? Why are they not requiring the crown corporation to full fill their prime mandate and provide aid assistance and compensation to the injured workers of British Columbia”
Prior to this video recording the minister’s office was asked for comments on the report and declined. For their experience of other injured workers in Canada please sere the go public CBC article Injured woman secretly videotaped by insurer, then wrongly accused of fraud https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/insurance-surveillance-injured-1.5899254?cmp=rss these practise are familiar to many injured workers in BC too.
