⁣In this interview from 1984, KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov describes ‘ideological subversion’, also known as psychological warfare (PSYWAR), as a “legitimate” four-step technique used to slowly destroy a country from within over several decades.

1. Demoralisation (15 to 30 years). During this stage, the moral fibre and integrity of the country is put into question, thereby creating doubt in the peoples’ minds. To do so, manipulation of the media and academia is required to influence an entire generation of youngsters.

2. Destabilisation (2 to 5 years). The purpose of this step is to change the status quo, particularly the country's economy, foreign relations, and defence systems.

3. Crisis (up to 6 weeks). This major step involves a revolutionary change of power. This is where a cataclysmic event divides the country and sparks civil unrest, such as the Arab Spring of 2010-2012.

4. Normalisation (up to 20 years) - the final stage is where the populace finally acquiesces and begins to assimilate the new system.

Bezmenov said: “In the country of your enemy, you expose them to the ideology of the enemy, in other words Marxist-Leninist ideology, which has been pumped into the soft heads of at least three generations of American students without being challenged or counter-balanced by the basic values of American patriotism.

“The result you can see.”

Yuri Alexandrovich Bezmenov (1939-1993); alias Tomas David Schuman, was a Soviet journalist for RIA Novosti and a former PGU KGB informant who defected to Canada in 1970.

He is best remembered for his anticommunist lectures and books published in the 1980s.
