The US system could work if Washington was not so corrupt. Big money (the military-industrial-corporate-Wall street complex) rules Washington, yet this could be avoided and the government could be cleaned up by eliminating all forms of lobbying and by making all elections (at all levels) exclusively publicly funded. It's not that complicated, but Americans seem to be completely unable to think outside of a given and limited political box (left or right) and to look at practical solutions that would benefit everyone...it is as if they wanted to keep on fighting with each other and being victimized by the corrupt system.
Any system can become corrupt, whether capitalist or socialist, when a population is passive and submissive and seeks to be led rather than served by a government. All governments are potentially dangerous beasts that need to be restrained by populations, so they do not become the lords and masters of the people. The people are supposed to be the employer and the government the employee, period. And if any entity should be surveilled and monitored, it should be the government by the population, not the population by government. "You have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide", a phrase that is arrogantly used by Homeland Security, should be turned around and applied to an ever more secretive government by the people, and it would if the people hadn't been so completely castrated and lobotomized or forced into a regressive state of infantilism and subordination.
The American people have, over many decades, become so mentally lazy, passive and subservient, and so different to authority that they are now living under a quasi-police state and still remain largely unaware of it, or are actually comfortable with it and want more. Socialism would not solve that problem, being rather totalitarian and authoritarian it would make it a lot worse, if that is possible.
