The only way for a contemporary reference to have relevance is if you are familiar with it. Keep in mind that for the past 20 years I have been staring up Satan's Ass, so it kinda numbs you to the abject Evil in the world. I've never seen the unedited Species movie so I can't say how gruesome it might be; however, I saw the uncut Species II and found it to be one of the most disgusting, distrubing, but fucking SPOT ON horror films I have the displeasure of viewing. After 11 years in the carnage of For-Profit dialysis I avoided all carnage as 'entertainment'. If you are sensitive to the nature of the system you are trapped in there is NOTHING from the NEWS to 'entertainment' that isn't a fuckfest designed to delight only those with purulent desires and Hastan itself. The problem for me began when I could not longer find a line between science and science fiction so I quit writing fiction decades ago. To me, this little vignette gives you insight into my associative mind and that schizo moment when you question whether this is Dream or Real, Art or Life. More like Fucking Endless Nightmare of the Undead.
